Project Summary: Offshore Wind Farm Design & Analysis
Over a three-week period, I utilized the Youwind platform to design and analyze offshore wind farm layouts off the coast of Nova Scotia. Leveraging my GIS background, I transitioned from using predefined areas to creating custom polygon boundaries for layout optimization.
Key Technical Workflows:
- Layout Optimization: Generated turbine layouts using
wake-optimizedpositioning and maximum spacing configurations. - Spatial Analysis: Utilized the
splitfunction to divide areas of interest into equal sections, analyzing the correlation between turbine density and wake losses. - Electrical Design: Engineered a mock transmission system by siting onshore and offshore substations and routing array cables using intuitive generation tools.
- Performance Metrics: Focused on the Turbine Layout, Wakes, and Electrical Transmissions modules to interpret how specific coordinates and exclusion zones impact energy yield.
Outcomes & Future Objectives: Through technical support and one-on-one tutorials, I
became familiar with the platform’s core workflows to achieve tangible design outcomes. Moving
forward, I aim to
integrate financial modelling to compare the CAPEX of different sites,
specifically analyzing the trade-offs between cabling costs, wake efficiency, and exclusion zone
restrictions.
